I agree with everything Highfield says, except for his conclusion. You have to deconstruct even further and more fundamental for the truly greatest invention, which Tom Standage says was writing.
That instantly resonated with me. But, peeling back on that, I think I’d have to agree with my friend David Johnson, who replied:
the greatest invention is bread. tracking grain and milling were why we needed writing. enabled div of labor, freed time up.
